"sunday school" implies that you are going to be educated about something (most likely something Biblical) on one day of the week, Sunday. "small group" implies that you are part of a small group of people of which the purpose has many possibilities.

Several ideas: Sunday School could be a Small Group, but a Small Group is not necessarily Sunday School.

Small groups, in the generic sense, are any group of people gathered for a variety of purposes and activities. However, in the more current sense of the word, small groups imply "cell groups" or "accountibility groups". These have specific meaning of reaching out to the community through evangelism and witness and training within for the purpose of creating disciples and future church leaders. I don't feel like Sunday School necessarily associates itself with the concepts of discipleship and accountibility.

I agree with both LKR and Ken. Sunday school is a small group, but it is dedicated mainly to once-a-week instruction.

Small groups, as such, are dedicated to a large variety of specific endeavors.

In the "church" sense, I would say the Sunday school is not a traditional "small group" unless it decides to dedicate itself to something over and above classroom functions.
